travel to italy
bach - italian concerto poulenc - napoli liszt - années de pélerinage ii: italie benjamin woo - prufrock sonata (2015) this programme presents pieces written by foreigners (from germany, france, hungary, and Canada, respectively) about italy. of course, italy is full of its own musical culture and composers, and thus perceptions from the outside are particularly interesting! having never been to italy myself (not yet!) these pieces are my way to vicariously travel to a new country, to understand what it is like to see italy from the outside. |
recollections
brahms - handel variations sophia gubaidulina - chaccone (1980) ravel - tombeau de couperin alexina louie - scenes from a jade terrace (2007) here, two recent works by female composers are paired with two classics of the piano repertoire, all revolving around the common theme of memory. brahms, gubaidulina and ravel all look backwards to the baroque, drawing in both explicit and implicit ways on the works of 17th and 18th century composers. louie's turn to the past also incorporates a look eastward, as her piece incorporates elements of her Chinese heritage |
